House Health Committee Passes House Bill 429

Montgomery, Alabama, February 21, 2018: The Alabama House Health Committee voted unanimously in support of House Bill 429, which authorizes certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs) and certified nurse midwives (CNMs) to have signature authority for medical forms within their scope of practice. House Bill 429 is the companion bill to Senate Bill 46 that was passed by the Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee on February 14, 2018.

The signature authority bill (SB46/HB429) establishes a historic precedence aimed at improving the State’s healthcare by allowing Alabama’s CRNPs and CNMs to sign forms such as those required for disabled parking placards, durable medical equipment, sports participation clearance, employment physicals, and other important forms pertaining to the provision of health care. “The Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama is extremely grateful for the support this legislation has received from members of the House and Senate Health Committees, health care organizations, and individuals across the state of Alabama,” said Robin Lawson, NPAA President.

The passage of HB429 in the Alabama House Health Committee is another step in the right direction toward better meeting the healthcare needs of Alabama citizens. The next step is for this legislation to be placed on the Senate and House Special Order Calendars for a vote by the full Senate and House of Representatives. If the legislation is passed by both the Senate and the House, it will then be sent to the Governor to be signed into law.
