 Critical Care Specialty Protocol Approved!

The Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama is extremely pleased to report that Dr. Eileen Meyer, our Vice President of Policy, was instrumental in drafting a Critical Care Specialty Protocol for Alabama Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants. The protocol was approved by the Joint Committee of the State Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Nursing for Advanced Practice Nurses this past week. NPAA is exceedingly grateful for the amount of time Dr. Meyer invested in researching the evidence, communicating with various stakeholders, and advocating for approval of the protocol. While the protocol has not yet been published online, a preliminary synopsis is shown below. Additional information pertaining to the protocol and training requirements will be released in the near future.Restricted to NPs/PAs working in Level 1 and 2 Trauma Centers

State Wide Language for 3 ENT APP Procedures Developed!

Dr. Meyer also contributed to the development of statewide language (e.g., guidelines and recommendations) for three Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Procedures. She collaborated with Kristi Gidley, PA-C, MSHA, Executive Director and William R. Carroll, MD, Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) on developing the language. The three ENT procedures are: (1) Flexible Fiberoptic Laryngoscopy/Stroboscopy; (2) Flexible Nasopharyngoscopy; and (3) Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy (flexible and rigid). Stay tuned for additional information about the guidelines and recommendations.

The Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama advocates for professional privileges consistent with nurse practitioner educational preparation. Dr. Meyer has done an extraordinary job drafting the critical care specialty protocol, contributing to statewide language for the ENT procedures, and advocating for these privileges. We thank Dr. Meyer for her outstanding contributions!
